ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY

When someone attempts to correct a particular hormonal imbalance without examining and fixing the others, treatments will fail to be successful. In order to attain not just great physical health but also mental, individuals need to address all neurotransmitter and hormone systems involved in reproduction, adrenal, thyroid and pancreatic function. Male adrenal insufficiency and stress go hand in hand. The adrenal glands, which are two triangle-shaped glands found above the kidneys, are responsible for regulating a man’s reaction to stress. The chief adrenal hormone used to manage stress is cortisol. The adrenal glands emit cortisol in response to stress, low blood sugar, excitement, and during exercise. Your adrenals respond under moments of stress by producing the necessary hormones to stimulate the body’s resources that help the brain respond to whatever stressful situation you have encountered. This could be something as large as having to remember something terrible in your childhood to merely lifting a pen off the desk. This may also be referred to as anything that breaks homeostasis. When the adrenals are subjected to constant stress signals they eventually become unable to respond with adequate amounts of hormones to address the brains request for stress control. If the adrenals are fatigued there is no on-demand energy generation. This can get worse over time and is attributed to many things including a lack of exercise, diet, stimulants, energy drinks, stressful environment and hormonal imbalances.

Testosterone plays a large role in adrenal function by limiting its production so that it does not get fatigued from working too hard. The male sex hormone does this in 2 ways: Reduction of ACTH (inflammation) at the pituitary and it also directly reduces adrenal activity. Now you can see why it is so important to carefully examine and rectify these issues when correcting other hormonal imbalances, if there is an issue elsewhere the attempted testosterone optimization program may not generate the vitality we are all seeking.

Thyroid hormones are closely related to adrenal insufficiency and it is extremely important to rule out fatigue before looking into thyroid treatment due to a deficiency. The adrenals may be burnt out from trying to make up for the lack of thyroid hormones, through stress hormone production. Starting a thyroid medication program before ruling out fatigue can have serious negative health consequences.

Adrenal insufficiency is like having a broken transmission in your car, you are pressing the gas pedal but the car will not move. This is how people with adrenal insufficiency feel, an inability to generate energy on demand. Thankfully adrenal fatigued can usually be treated and IMT has developed a cost effective process in determining if you are experiencing adrenal insufficiency. Signs and symptoms include but are not limited to the following:

Sugar cravings
Salt cravings
Fatigue sleepiness in the late afternoon.
Low libido
Lack of energy
Frequent colds
Needing coffee or stimulants to function
Difficulty in concentrating

MOST OF THESE SYMPTOMS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF LOW TESTOSTERONE.

Our 3-step process will correctly diagnose your hormone systems so we can determine if it is adrenal insufficiency, low testosterone, thyroid or a combination that is causing your symptoms. Knowing the answers to these questions will save time, money and the grief of a failed program.

Adrenal History Report
Saliva Test Evaluation
Blood Test Evaluation
Adrenal History Report Evaluation

IMT will thoroughly assess your report in order to determine if further testing is needed. Our Adrenal report will not just help in the diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency, it will also help in determining how severe your individual case is and help us customize and tailor treatment to your individual needs. The report is a series of questions that will be evaluated thoroughly before taking the next step in the process.

SALIVA EVALUATION

IMT will attempt to determine if treatment is needed with 8 simple saliva tests. Since adrenal insufficiency is measured by a cortisol response it is important to get multiple readings in one day. What we are trying to do is see if we can get a high reading of cortisol or DHEA, to see if your body is responding to the demand. If none of the saliva tests show a response then there is a high probability you are experiencing adrenal insufficiency. There will be four DHEA saliva tests and four cortisol tests. It is important to do these in an environment that’s comfortable for you so that we do not generate an error due to a high stress environment.

BLOOD TEST EVALUATION

If your saliva testing comes back negative despite the Adrenal History Report is still pointing to adrenal insufficiency, it is necessary to examine the four points of measure with a complete blood panel. IMT will cross-reference your blood test with the saliva test in order to rule out or confirm diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency. We will test all areas of hormone function with our executive panel.

TESTS INCLUDED IN THIS PANEL ARE:

  • Cortisol
  • Folate
  • Comprehensive Metabolic panel (14)
  • CBC with Differential/Platelet
  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
  • Thyroid Function – TSH, T3, T4
  • Estradiol
  • Progesterone
  • Lipid Panel with LDL/HDL Ratio
  • Testosterone, Free and Total
  • Prostate Specific Ag, Serum
  • IGF-1 (Insulin Growth Factor 1)
  • Hepatic Panel
  • DHEA-S
  • Prolactin
  • Ferritin
  • SHBG

The 4 main goals of our program that specifically address adrenal insufficiency are:

  1. Healthy lifestyle modifications
  2. Proper nutrition
  3. Correct dietary supplements
  4. Moderate physical exercise
  5. Optimize testosterone levels

IMT will customize a program specifically for you, using the information gathered. Our exclusive software system will input the necessary data in to a profile designated to you so that our team of doctor’s, nutritionist and physical training specialist can easily collaborate to strengthen each area of concern.

Depending on the severity and impact of adrenal insufficiency it can take anywhere from six months to two years to fully achieve optimal results, although there should be relatively steady progress starting after the first 2 months. It is important that the patient continue with a dedicated program as long as needed, in order to fully rectify the issue.

With your newly enhanced adrenal function you may notice that initially you feel a little worse after beginning your dietary supplement program designed for adrenal support. Some patients refer to this as cold or flu like symptoms, achiness or not feeling well overall. During the period of adrenal insufficiency, some of the physiological processes modulated by the adrenal gland can slow down and affect proper immune function; detoxification and elimination of waste. When your program immediately supports adrenal gland function, all of these processes pick up their pace, so the new spurt in detoxification and immune activity can produce feelings of illness. This is actually a good sign that your program is working and should stop shortly after commencing your program.
